The paper reports on how ChatGPT, a currently state-of-the-art text-based AI tool, has been integrated into the design and execution of a speaking activity within the TBT framework. The participant is a 13-year-old Vietnamese student at an intermediate level of English proficiency. The objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of AI-assisted task design in developing communicative skills. Background research into the literature on AI in education has indicated that from early tools like PLATO and SCHOLAR, AI technologies have been widely adopted in the late 2010s. Task-Based Teaching, emphasizing real-life communicative tasks over traditional language forms, serves as the instructional foundation for this study. The AI-generated lesson plan for the topic of "Daily Routines" was implemented in a one-hour online session, and its impact was assessed through student engagement, language proficiency, feedback, and teacher observations. Results show the student's significant improvement in fluency, accuracy, and confidence, hence proving that AI tools such as ChatGPT can enhance the language learning outcome within the TBT methodology. The paper contributes to the ever-growing literature on AI applications in education and specifically in language teaching and also pinpoints the benefits of integrating advanced AI technologies in instructional design. |
