Leveraging ChatGPT to Enhance English Language Teaching in Iran: A Critical Analysis

This research delves into the integration of ChatGPT in English Language Teaching (ELT) within the Iranian educational landscape. By employing a mixed-methods approach, the study examines the potential benefits and drawbacks of utilizing ChatGPT as a tool to elevate English language acquisition for Iranian EFL learners. A questionnaire survey was administered to 62 ELT educators in Mazandaran, Iran, and 12 in-depth interviews were conducted to corroborate and expand upon the quantitative data. The findings illuminate the promising avenues that ChatGPT presents in Iranian ELT, such as tailored learning experiences, immediate feedback mechanisms, professional development opportunities for teachers, and access to authentic language materials. Nevertheless, the research also highlights potential challenges, including concerns regarding accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and overreliance on technological solutions. This study provides valuable insights for ELT instructors and educational stakeholders in Iran, illuminating the potential advantages and limitations of incorporating AI-powered conversational agents like ChatGPT into ELT practices. By fostering informed decision-making and effective technological integration in language learning environments, this research aims to contribute to the advancement of English language education in Iran.
