| Different fields of human knowledge, from arts and humanities to sciences, exploit recent revolutionary advancements and transformations in artificial intelligence, incorporating the potentials of AI to expand boundaries of possibilities. Literary criticism, an intersection of fields like linguistics, philosophy and aesthetics, could leverage the capabilities of progress in AI, discovering diverse aspects of literary works. This paper reviews some of the applications of AI and AI-related technologies like natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) in literary criticism. These technologies offer new methodologies for textual analysis and interpretation, processing vast amounts of text, uncovering patterns and insights that traditional methods might overlook. AI-driven tools can analyze recurring themes, stylistic devices, and plot structures, providing data-driven approaches to literary analysis. NLP facilitates examination of language use, sentiment, and narrative techniques across different texts. AI solutions can assist authorship attribution. ML algorithms analyze writing styles, determining anonymous or disputed texts’ authorship. AI can assist genre classification and identification of intertextual connections, revealing influences and relationships of different works. These technologies support creation of digital humanities projects, where large corpora of texts are analyzed to study historical and cultural trends in literature. AI and NLP enhance accessibility of literary criticism through automated summarization and translation, making scholarly work more accessible. While AI-driven analyses do not replace human critics, they offer complementary perspectives, expanding the discourse around literary works. By integrating AI into literary criticism, scholars adapt more comprehensive and nuanced approaches to understanding literature, enriching the field with innovative insights and methodologies. |
