Investigating of the AI-supported tools in English Language Teaching and Learning: A library study |

Over the past years, digital technologies have become crucial in the ELT field. New technologies are revolutionizing the educational system, affecting more than just teaching methodologies. As one of the most outstanding technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced significantly in both academic and practical applications, sparking debates about its ethical implications and future potential. In education, particularly in ELT, AI is transforming traditional pedagogical approaches. This library study aimed to understand AI's role and elucidate the benefits and possible challenges of AI-powered tools by means of comprehensive study of library materials, as far as possible, and the results of relevant previous studies. Relying on the collected documents different AI-supported tools/Apps like ChatGPT, DALL-E, FluentU, Duolingo, Pimsleur, etc. were reviewed. The analysis shows that AI-powered language learning Apps offer some outstanding benefits like personalization of learning, engagement, real-world language use cases, accessibility and flexibility. However, it seems that there are some challenges like lack of human interaction, dependence on technology and data privacy concerns that need to be taken into account if AI-powered language tools are to gain the unique and comprehensive role in language teaching and learning. Future trends in English language teaching/learning look promising with ongoing advancements in AI technology. |
