The Effects of Augmented and Virtual Reality on Teaching and Learning English: A Comprehensive Review of Literature

چکیده مقاله
This study synthesizes 48 peer-reviewed research articles published between 2019 and 2024 to explore the applications, challenges, and best practices of augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in English language education. Recognizing the transformative potential of AR/VR to inspire and motivate learners, this comprehensive analysis adheres to rigorous inclusion criteria and high research standards, including an inter-rater reliability assessment (Cohen's kappa = 0.83). Consequently, the study identified six key themes: the impact of AR/VR on learner engagement; benefits and strategies for integrating these technologies; effective implementation practices; learners' perceptions of AR/VR effectiveness; challenges in adopting AR/VR; and, finally, the impact of AR/VR on language acquisition. Although the field is still developing, the findings indicate an exciting and promising future for AR/VR in English language teaching and learning. Therefore, this synthesis provides educators with valuable insights and actionable recommendations for effectively incorporating AR/VR technologies, ultimately aiming to enhance learning outcomes, foster more personalized educational experiences, and inspire a new era in language education.
