An In-depth Review of the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

The sprouting influence of artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to fundamentally reshape the landscape of English language education. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted to investigate the applications, challenges, and best practices associated with AI within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. This study critically analyzed 24 pivotal research articles published between 2021 and 2024, employing a qualitative synthesis to capture the rapidly evolving role of AI in EFL. Methodological rigor was ensured by applying stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria, complemented by an inter-rater reliability assessment (Cohen's kappa = 0.86). The analysis yielded five key themes: the conceptualization of AI within EFL, the determinants influencing its adoption, the challenges confronting educators, existing research gaps, and prospective avenues for future inquiry. While integrating AI into EFL pedagogy remains in its nascent stages and presents various challenges, this study furnishes educators with crucial insights and actionable recommendations, empowering them to leverage AI to enhance EFL instruction effectively. Consequently, by thoroughly understanding AI's potential benefits and inherent limitations, educators can make informed decisions regarding its implementation, ultimately facilitating improved student outcomes, a more personalized learning experience, and increased educator motivation and commitment to AI integration.
