A Synthesis Study on the Use of Chatbots (AI Software) in Teaching the English Language

چکیده مقاله
This study explores the burgeoning role of chatbots, particularly sophisticated large language models like ChatGPT, in enhancing English language acquisition within educational contexts. Recognizing the growing interest in this area, the research employs a qualitative synthesis of existing literature to comprehensively investigate the impact of chatbots on English language education. Following a rigorous qualitative research paradigm, the study systematically analyzed content from 15 carefully selected articles from reputable academic databases. To ensure a thorough exploration of the topic, the methodology adhered to the established framework of Sandelowski and Barroso (2007). Furthermore, the reliability of the findings was validated using Cohen's Kappa coefficient, achieving a substantial agreement of 0.88. The synthesis reveals that chatbots, focusing on ChatGPT, serve as effective tools and practical resources for learners of English as a foreign language. Consequently, the analysis highlights learners' experiences with chatbot-assisted language instruction, elucidating key factors influencing learning outcomes and this pedagogical approach's associated benefits and limitations. While acknowledging specific challenges inherent in this approach, the findings generally indicate a promising impact on educational practices, underscoring the potential of chatbots to enhance language instruction significantly. Therefore, as the educational landscape evolves, teacher training programs must incorporate artificial intelligence and innovative pedagogical strategies to promote digital literacy. These insights provide educators with foundational knowledge to effectively leverage chatbots throughout various stages of second language acquisition, ultimately enriching the learning experience for their students.
