Challenges of Using Technology in Language Learning Classroom Environments: A Review of Literature

The integration of technology in English language classroom environments has been a subject of extensive research, highlighting both its potential benefits and inherent challenges. This paper aims to review the literature on the challenges of using technology in language learning classroom environments. Recent literature reveals that while technology can enhance language learning by providing access to authentic materials, fostering interactive learning, and supporting personalized education, several obstacles hinder its effective implementation. Key challenges include limited access to technological resources, insufficient digital literacy among educators and students, hesitancy due to lacking familiarity and being unequipped with related skills, and pedagogical issues related to integrating technology into traditional teaching methods. Studies indicate that teachers often face difficulties in using technology due to a lack of training and support, leading to underutilization of available tools. Additionally, infrastructural constraints, such as unreliable internet connectivity and inadequate technical support, further exacerbate these challenges. Despite these hurdles, the literature underscores the importance of addressing these issues to fully leverage the benefits of technology in language education. Trends in recent research emphasize the need for comprehensive professional development programs for teachers, investment in technological infrastructure, and the development of pedagogically sound digital content. Moreover, there is a growing recognition of the role of collaborative learning environments and the use of multimodal resources to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Overall, the evolving landscape of technology in English language classrooms calls for a balanced approach that addresses the challenges while maximizing the opportunities for enriching language education.
