Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we learn languages. It provides a wide range of advanced and innovative tools that optimize the learning process and accelerate progress. Gemini 1.5 Flash, part of the cutting-edge family of AI models from Google, is becoming increasingly popular tools for helping people with more advanced skills of language learning such as conversation, academic writing and translation. Given this, the current study aimed at examining the effectiveness of using Gemini 1.5 Flash as a translingual tool in teaching English writing and (as well as translation). To this end, we asked a group of Iranian EFL students to translate a Persian text into an English text. The Persian text was, then, submitted to Gemini 1.5 Flash. Later, the two translated texts were compared with one another as well as with the original Persian text. Finally, the students revised their translated text by referring to text translated by the Gemini 1.5 Flash. The analyses revealed that the translated text by Gemini 1.5 Flash was significantly better than that of the participants in that it used more technical vocabulary and made fewer spelling and grammatical errors. This brings to attention the effectiveness of using Gemini 1.5 Flash as a translingual tool in teaching English writing which can help EFL students enhance their English writing performance. Pedagogical implications are discussed! |
