Chatbot Storytelling in Iranian Adaptive Learning of English: A Semiotic Study on Cultural Heritage

چکیده مقاله
While Iranian English learners have the opportunity to learn English through story-making with chatbots, these tools often struggle to incorporate cultural heritage into the creation of pedagogical content. However, it is possible to teach cultural concepts to chatbots through prompt engineering during story-making. This research aims to investigate how interactive prompts can be applied to chatbots in learning English while considering cultural concepts. The research corpus consists of 150 stories created using AI tools such as GPT and AI Dungeon, collected through a documentary method from 2024 to 2025. This includes a questionnaire that can lead to pedagogical content through dialogical conversations between humans and machines conducted in two phases. In the initial phase, content generated by chatbots in response to the questionnaire was collected. In the second phase, a prompt was added to the questionnaire, asking the chatbots to create a story. The research corpus was analyzed using a mixed-method (quantitative and qualitative methods). The resulting stories will be analyzed using an integrated model of cultural semiotics. This integrated method utilizes a micro-to-macro analysis to select samples from a large dataset. In the qualitative study, micro-analytical boundaries were crossed to uncover groundbreaking findings and identify subtle shifts in participants' focused attention. Additionally, this research incorporates macro-analytical statistical analysis combined with a hybrid machine learning approach to gain insights into the semiotics of creating pedagogical content using AI tools. The findings of this research will reveal the meaning-making patterns associated with the semiotics of storytelling through interactive AI tools.
